The soil in South Styria often consists of a type called Opok. Opok is a marly, calcareous, sedimentary rock formation. This soil type is particularly suitable for viticulture because it provides good drainage. Some vineyards may also have gravel soils, which also promote good water permeability.
The general flavor profile of Chardonnay wines includes aromas of green apples, citrus fruits, peaches, and often tropical fruits. Depending on the winemaking process, Chardonnay can also exhibit notes of butter, vanilla, or toasted oak, especially when aged in oak barrels (barriques).
Many vineyards in South Styria are located on steep slopes. These slopes allow for optimal sunlight exposure and provide excellent drainage for rainwater. Due to the hilly topography, some vineyards are terraced to counteract the steep inclines.
