Frequently Asked Questions about Styrian Wines

Styria consists of three main wine regions: South Styria, Vulkanland Styria, and West Styria. Each of these regions offers unique terroirs and wine styles. South Styria is particularly renowned for Sauvignon Blanc, Vulkanland Styria for Traminer, and West Styria for Schilcher (a unique rosé wine made from the Blauer Wildbacher grape).

Styria is known for its white wines, especially Sauvignon Blanc, Chardonnay (known as Morillon), Welschriesling, and Traminer. Among red wines, Blauer Wildbacher, Pinot Noir, and Zweigelt are the most common grape varieties.

Styrian white wines are known for their freshness, minerality, and flavors of citrus fruits, green apple, and flowers. Red wines from Styria often offer aromas of red berries, spices, and a subtle acidity. Schilcher, a rosé wine made from Blauer Wildbacher, is characterized by its crisp acidity and fruity notes.

Styrian white wines pair excellently with fish, seafood, salads, and light appetizers. Red wines complement grilled meats, pasta, and hearty stews. Schilcher is ideal as an aperitif or with light summer dishes.

Most Styrian white wines are best enjoyed while young to preserve their freshness and fruitiness. They should typically be consumed within 1-3 years after bottling. However, high-quality red wines can be aged for several years.
