The wine KĀMAKA is cultivated on the exceptional terroir of Seyssuel. A true "wine from stones," all vines were planted by hand using a metal rod into coarse schist rocks. It was important to explain the nature of the soil in naming this cuvée - made entirely from 100% Syrah. When a New Zealand winemaker steps onto the soil of Seyssuel... it results in "KĀMAKA," which in Māori means rock and/or stones. Wines made from Syrah grapes are renowned for their deep red color and intense aromas of dark fruits like black cherries, accompanied by notes of black pepper, spices, and sometimes smoky nuances. They often provide a robust structure with rich flavor and distinctively pronounced tannins. The range of styles varies from fruity and approachable to complex and age-worthy.
Seyssuel is an emerging wine region in France, located along the banks of the Rhône River north of Lyon. The region is renowned for its schist soil, which imparts a unique terroir influence. Seyssuel has gained attention in recent years, particularly for its Syrah wines, which exhibit distinctive expression due to the soil and microclimate. Wines from Seyssuel often showcase dark fruit aromas, spiciness, and elegance. The region has established itself as an exciting wine-growing area thanks to dedicated winemakers and its potential for producing exceptional wines.
