The Champagne region is synonymous with what is arguably the world's most famous sparkling wine – and perhaps the most famous wine of all. Champagne production is strictly regulated, complex, and relatively centrally organized, with a few world-renowned brands distributing the vast majority of it: Moët & Chandon, Veuve Clicquot, and Dom Pérignon, to name just a few.
Seven grape varieties are permitted for the production of genuine Champagne, three of which account for over 99% of the total vineyard area: Pinot Noir, Chardonnay and Pinot Meunier, which are used partly as a cuvée, partly blended for authentic Champagne.
